Apple has вЂњgreatвЂќ new iMacs in the pipeline, slated for release вЂњthis yearвЂќ, including configurations specifically targeted at large segments of the pro market.ДЄt the time of writing Apple's store was still showing the existing machines and we have not seen any official announcements from Apple, so this is all still rumour.ДЄpparently, there were only 9 people invited to this meeting.

No USB-C, no Thunderbolt 3 (and so no support for the LG UltraFine 5K display). Nothing else is changing, including the ports. The $3999 model goes from 6 CPU cores to 8, and from dual D500 GPUs to dual D800 GPUs. The $2999 model goes from 4 Xeon CPU cores to 6, and from dual AMD G300 GPUs to dual G500 GPUs. (I hope that means вЂњnext yearвЂќ, but all Apple said was вЂњnot this yearвЂќ.) In the meantime, Apple is today releasing meager speed-bump updates to the existing Mac Pros. These next-gen Mac Pros and pro displays вЂњwill not ship this yearвЂќ. TheyвЂ™re also working on Apple-branded pro displays to go with them.

Apple is currently hard at work on a вЂњcompletely rethoughtвЂќ Mac Pro, with a modular design that can accommodate high-end CPUs and big honking hot-running GPUs, and which should make it easier for Apple to update with new components on a regular basis. Most of the Apple rumour sites are quoting a single source, John Gruber of Daring Fireball, who apparently was one of a small number of journalists who were invited to a roundtable meeting with Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller at their corporate headquarters. This, if true, has got to be good news to Mac Pro users as the existing Mac Pro 'trash-can' hasn't been updated since December 2013. It is reported that Apple is building a new 'modular' version of its high-end desktop computer. It is being reported across all the Apple rumour sites that Apple has confirmed that a new Mac Pro is coming. This is certainly welcome news for fans of the high quality Apple-branded display, which was discontinued and replaced for the time being with Apple and LGвЂ™s UltraFine 4K and 5K Monitors.Apparently, the Mac Pro isn't dead after all.

Meanwhile, Apple also mentioned that itвЂ™s working on a new вЂњhigh-end Pro display,вЂќ which will likely embody a redesign of its classic Thunderbolt display introduced back in 2011 and discontinued last year. Regardless of its physical footprint, Apple promises that the upcoming Mac Pro will embody a вЂњhigh-performance, high-throughputвЂќ system - suggesting it will not only boast an array of powerful components which could even outperform the iMac Pro, but will likely be even more expensive to boot.В It was revealed that a top-tier iMac Pro configuration, boasting anВ 18-core, 2.3GHz Intel Xeon W-class processor, 4TB of SSD storage, 128GB of ECC RAM, and AMD Radeon Pro Vega 64 graphics with 16GB of HBM2 memory, will run customers a whopping $13K. Sadly, we also donвЂ™t know what the new Mac Pro will look like at this point - however given it will embody a modular, user-upgradeable form factor, it may take on the shape and dimensions of a taller, wider вЂtowerвЂ™ design (similar to AppleвЂ™s 2012 Mac Pro) as opposed to the current Mac ProвЂ™s ultra-compact, cylindrical shape. Not to mention, but weвЂ™re coming up on the fifth year now since Apple last refreshed its Mac Pro in 2013 so a high-performance Mac Pro boasting an upgradeable design sounds about ripe for picking, doesnвЂ™t it? When will it launch? We really have no indication at this point, unfortunately - however given the intriguing fact that Apple essentially spilled the beans, itвЂ™s not unreasonable to assume we could hear more about the machine in 2018 or 2019. Interestingly, while this wouldnвЂ™t be the first time weвЂ™ve heard of CupertinoвЂ™s plans to develop a modular Mac Pro, the company clearly wants us all to know - loud and proud - that itвЂ™s still dedicated to its original, ultra high-end Pro desktop, and that we can expect the вЂcompletely redesigned, next generationвЂ™ computer soon enough. вЂњIn addition to the new iMac Pro, Apple is working on a completely redesigned, next-generation Mac Pro architected for pro customers who need the highest performance, high-throughput system in a modular, upgradeable design, as well as a new high-end pro display,вЂќ Apple said.
